Chapter 41

WILLOW HAD THOUGHT a lot about their upcoming stop at Bounders. It was one day out in opposite directions from either Taskers Station or West Ridge Station, so they didn’t need the Circuit to bring them basics. Her briefing had suggested that there might be a few purchases but not to expect much. Bounders was one of the few industrial towns. It had a cement plant, a smelter and a cotton mill. The entire population was workers and their families. They had a couple of stores of their own, a big clinic and good security. She thought hard about what they might want.

The Circuit crew got a percentage of the net profits on top of their barely adequate base pay. The Boss got the biggest, Captain, Judge, Doc and Vet came next, and it got smaller for the rest of the crew based on their years of experience. That bonus at the end of the circuit could be a really nice surprise. For some, it would determine the rest of the year. Willow hated to have a stop that wouldn’t bring in any income. Her crew was counting on her to do her best for them at each stop.

She went to the warehouse with a hunch. If she did the same job every day with the same people in the same place, she’d want something out of the ordinary. So she scoured the shelves looking for the unique. There was a section of the warehouse with small lots that were waiting to be joined up with others. She laid claim to all of it.

There were things she had doubts about, but some she knew were winners. A handful of bright red buttons, five jars of spicy pickle relish, a hand woven scarf in shades of pale lavender, a wooden flute and a pair of barrettes with electric-blue enamel on them, all offered something out of the ordinary. There were shelves full of things that no one thought saleable. She loaded them onto a pallet to be delivered to her wagon.

Since Bounders didn’t need any livestock or seeds, the wagon would have a lot of empty space. She found Katrina and told her of her plan.

“You think they’ll want stuff like that?” Katrina asked skeptically.

“Think about it. They don’t even get a Circuit Fair Day. They need something fun.”

Katrina nodded, but seemed a little sad.

Willow had a hard time keeping a smile off her face as she announced the other half of her plan. “And since they have their own mail system, that means we can open the mail booth for purchases.”

Katrina lit up with excitement. “Really?”

“I’m going to ask Micah to give you Simon as a helper.”

Katrina made a face.

“He’s there to help you. If things get busy, he can lend a hand. But he’s security first. If you don’t need help, he’s got his orders.”

“Okay,” she said begrudgingly.

“Now help me sort this.” They spent the better part of the day sorting and assessing. Each item had the price of the original exchange.
